Stay Motivated About Exercising Over the Holidays (+ a short yoga flow)

When it comes to sticking to a regimen of exercise and stretching, routine is key. This can all go out the window when the holidays roll around.

There’s no end of reasons why it’s tough to stick to our usual schedules during this time: Christmas parties, shopping for gifts, decorating your house, cooking huge dinners, travelling…etc. Not to mention work can be more chaotic AND it’s pitch black in the mornings and evenings (not very energizing!).

So ultimately you’re more tired than normal, and with even more to do!

How can you fit exercising and stretching into all that?!

You Need To Plan Ahead

Even though it’s hard, finding the time will be hugely beneficial. And not just for your physical health. Getting active reduces stress hormones, and gentle stretches help calm your nervous system.

But if you wait to see how it goes, then chances are you won’t end up doing any exercise at all! While this is true at any time of year, it is especially true during busy times. You need to look ahead at your calendar and decide when you can set aside some time to take care of yourself.

Are there any yoga or fitness classes you can make time for? Or an active outdoor activity like skiing or snowshoeing?

Once you decide WHEN you will exercise, put notifications in your calendar or set alarms so you don’t forget!

Be as specific as possible. “Saturday morning” may come and go, but Saturday at 10 am is something you are more likely to stick to.

Another strategy is linking exercising and stretching to something that is already a part of your routine. It could be as small as a quick morning stretch before your first cup of coffee, or a more extended workout before your shower. The key is finding what’s manageable for you and your schedule.

A 12-Minute Gentle Flow to Reset

To make things easy, I put together a gentle Yoga Flow that includes gentle stretches and movements that wake up your body without feeling too strenuous. It’s also perfect for beginners, so no problem if you’ve never done yoga (or don’t have a yoga mat!).

This can be your go-to when you want to get active without having to think or even get changed — do this in your PJs if you want!

With a hectic schedule, you will come to appreciate these times of reprieve from the holiday hustle and bustle. A time when you can focus on YOU. And while it can be difficult getting going sometimes, I know you will feel better when you are done. Holding on to these moments can help motivate you through the holidays (and hopefully beyond!).
